A Parent’s Guide to Swim Lessons in Sonoma County
October 16, 2026Why Families Choose Our Half Moon Bay Swim School
There are plenty of things families consider when choosing swim lessons: location, schedule, class size, teachers and, of course, whether their child is happy and learning.
But sometimes the feel of a swim school matters just as much.
La Petite Baleen Half Moon Bay is our original community and one of our most unique locations. It’s smaller, quieter and deeply connected to the history of LPB. For families looking for swim lessons in Half Moon Bay, Pacifica or elsewhere on the Coastside, here’s what makes this Aquatic Classroom® special.
It All Started in Half Moon Bay
La Petite Baleen began in 1979 in the backyard pool of founders Irene Madrid and John Kolbisen’s Half Moon Bay home.
Both were public school teachers who brought their understanding of children, physical education and development into the water. Over time, their approach grew into La Petite Baleen’s Aquatic Classroom®, a program built around the idea that swim lessons can teach much more than swimming.
Our current Half Moon Bay swim school opened in 1985, which means generations of Coastside families have learned to swim with LPB.
That history is still very much part of the school today.
A Smaller, Quieter Swim School Experience
One of the things that makes our Half Moon Bay location different is its size.
Our warm indoor pool has a maximum of just three classes running at one time.
For some children, that smaller environment can be a wonderful fit. There is less activity happening around the pool, teachers and families become familiar faces, and swimmers can settle into a consistent weekly routine.
This can be especially appealing for younger children, cautious swimmers or families who simply prefer a more intimate swim school experience.
Small does not mean limited. Swimmers can progress from their earliest parent-and-child classes through independent swimming, water-safety skills, endurance and advanced strokes.
Experienced Swim Teachers Who Know Their Community
A swim curriculum is only as strong as the people teaching it.
Half Moon Bay is home to experienced swim teachers, including long-time LPB team members who bring years of knowledge to the pool. That experience matters because children do not all learn the same way or at the same pace.
Some swimmers jump into a new class without hesitation. Others need time to build trust. Some respond to repetition, some to play and some need a teacher who knows when to encourage them through a challenge.
Our teachers are trained not only in swimming skills, but in the La Petite Baleen approach to teaching children. LPB’s curriculum uses child-development principles, positive reinforcement and a clear progression of skills.
A Warm Indoor Pool, All Year Long
Half Moon Bay weather has plenty of personality. Your swim lesson does not have to depend on it.
Our Half Moon Bay school features a 90-degree indoor pool and offers lessons year-round.
That consistency matters when children are building a physical skill. Weekly practice gives swimmers opportunities to build on what they learned in the previous lesson instead of repeatedly stopping and starting with the seasons.
It also makes swimming something families can make part of their routine throughout the year, not just during summer.
More Than Learning to Swim
At La Petite Baleen, our goal has never been simply to move children through a checklist of swimming skills.
Our Aquatic Classroom® combines swimming with child development. As children learn breath control, floating, independent movement, water safety, endurance and strokes, they are also practicing things like listening, patience, confidence, persistence and working through challenges.
Swimming is the classroom. Growing capable, confident children is a big part of what happens inside it.
Lessons for Every Stage
Families do not have to wait until their child is preschool-age to begin.
La Petite Baleen offers swim lessons beginning at 2 months old, with Baby and Me, Toddler and Me and progressive swim levels for children, teens and adults. New swimmers can join throughout the year.
We also offer free swim lessons for infants ages 2 through 5 months, giving families an opportunity to begin creating positive experiences in the water from the very beginning.
Make Your Swim Lesson Part of a Coastside Day
For local families, LPB may already be part of the weekly routine.
For families coming from Pacifica, San Mateo or farther away, a Half Moon Bay swim lesson can also become part of a day on the Coast.
Our school is located right on Main Street, making it easy to pair swimming with lunch downtown, a playground visit, a walk along the coast or another family adventure.
Sometimes the trip to swim class becomes part of the fun.
Come Experience Half Moon Bay for Yourself
Every child responds differently to a teacher, class and environment, which is why experiencing the program yourself can be so valuable.
New students can start with a free trial group lesson at La Petite Baleen Half Moon Bay.
